Because they are adjacent to the whole alliance that made us form NATO. Once upon a time their proximity to the USSR was a strategic counter balance, the only place our missiles could range Russia. OBTW the reason the USSR put missiles in Cuba. Turkey is a major arms manufacturer. Alliance membership curbs who they sell to. As the only Muslim nation in NATO they are handy. Guess who they trade arms with...Israel. The current government is not typical of the support Turkey provided NATO over the years. The Kurd thing is sticky, but not a deal breaker. Kurds and Turks have been at a low grade insurgency for decades. My office mate in NATO was a decorated Turk SF guy. Give you a stab in the dark why. Had to call in an air strike on his own pos.

the country of Turkey has always been of the Southeastern flank of NATO. The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 was diffused bye United States of green to remove Jupiter missiles that were aimed at Russia in exchange for the missiles in Cuba. turkey has a huge Army and they were also good fighters in the Korean War. The Turks are no pushovers. it's just too bad the Turkish president has it out for that Muslim cleric who's living in United States who considers The Man suspected Behind the last coup attempt. He wanted extradited and he would execute him but the United States won't let him go.
