First no one can predict mother nature so to call type of weather related event a 100 year flood or 50 year flood does not make any sense. It seems to me that we report weather related incidents on the news more than we used to. In general most people are never ready for a weather related catastrophe except when they predict heavy snow, then everybody runs out to the store.

The reference to a 50 year or 100 year event relates to the statistical occurrences for catastrophic events, not just weather. The pinnacle on the scale of unpredictable events is called a black swan, an event so remote as to be seemingly impossible to occur - like a volcano and earthquake happening simultaneously in Yellowstone National park.

Ah, but you do get an earthquake with most volcano's, maybe not a 8.5. I am just saying mother nature is unpredictable. When something like a flood happens the news agencies go out of their minds trying to pin it on some cause.

Well, it didn't help that we were in a drought all winter long, either. Very little snowfall this year. All my meteorology friends are calling for a wet summer, so this could be a trend this year. Due to the drought, the area just wasn't ready for it - erosion continued throughout the winter, causing more banks to give way.
