I mean, it does seem like this has become a "who's is bigger" contest, but perhaps shows of strength like this do actually deter some actual actions by the dictator?

SSgt (Join to see) Can only play chicken so many times before shit goes south. I honestly think that he believes the propaganda that his government writes about him. I sincerely hope cooler heads prevail. It seems that Donald Trump has cooled the rhetoric somewhat. Instead of fire and fury, replacing it with a more subdued We'll See. I have to give him credit for actually tempering his remarks.

PO3 Steven Sherrill I'm confident that, with all the Generals surrounding him on the cabinet, a rash decision would be avoided for a more calculated one. Most of these exercises have been planned for some time, they just pump up the impressive factor in cases like this.

SSgt (Join to see) - If they really want to send a message, they should shoot the missiles down as soon as they clear DPRK air space. Let Lil' Kim see his military might destroyed before it gets anywhere near a target. Let him know that he is not a threat because we have the ability to prevent him from actually attacking anything. I do see it as a double edged sword in that it could provoke him to launch a real attack.

Well the exercises have been going on since the 50's, so I don't think it's a measuring contest. We owe it to our allies and our own military to be fully prepared for a re-opening of hostilities. And considering that we are, and have been, at technical war with North Korea since the UN left there, I say we should keep up every show of force we have. The truce has only lasted because the North Koreans see that stuff.

SSG (Join to see) Agreed. The only difference in this exercise from those in the past is that we pumped up the show of force. I'm leaning heavily on the belief that NK is desperately trying to get us to throw the first punch so they can claim victim status to the rest of the world - at least the parts that will listen.
