The American cargo ship Baton Rouge Victory strikes a mine laid by the Viet Cong in the Long Tao River, 22 miles south of Saigon. The half-submerged ship blocked the route from the South Vietnamese capital to the sea. Seven crewmen were killed.

The Viet Cong had some strategic thinkers an/or they had strategic advisers SP5 Mark Kuzinski in order to realize that sinking a cargo vessel was the best way to block the channel from Saigon to the sea. They probably got the mine from North Vietnam which sank the USA cargo ship Baton Rouge Victory and killed seven crewmembers.
Throughout the war the VC became more adept at low cost and improvised explosives, etc.
