Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on November 17, 1856 the United States buttresses its control over the Gadsden Purchase with the establishment of Fort Buchanan. Named for recently elected President James Buchanan, Fort Buchanan was located on the Sonoita River in present-day southern Arizona.
During the Civil War the post had the dubious distinction of being the only post captured by the Chiricahua apache.
