The most chilling statistic I read about the RVN war was that gvt analysts figured that if we kept killing NVA, VC, etc at the same rate as when the study was done (yr forgotten), that the North Vietnamese had the population base to replenish the casualties without let up for an indefinite period of time.. No matter how many of them we killed, they would never stop coming. Not a pleasant thought. Such is the price we pay for waging a limited war with limited objectives and limited resources and backing the wrong (aka losing) side. It seems we have learned nothing although we spent 58,000 + lives making the point.

We are better at not getting so many of our guys killed. As a rule there are far fewer collateral damage casualties. We fortunately have a volunteer military so that cuts down on the numbers of utter incompetents and psychologically unfit individuals.
Our communications network is eons better than in the past. Command structure direct information is rapid and we have the capability to monitor on the ground situations with drones even at night. Keyhole satellite and high altitude information centers allow for very detailed enemy troop movement analysis as well as providing for discovery of suspicious movement patterns of movements of individual and supplies.
As to picking our fights? Well, I don't think we are quite as gullible as we used to be.

SP5 Mark Kuzinski As history unfolds more of the true situation in SVN is revealed. Our early intelligence was marginal at best.
