Listen folks... tech is nice... but you’ll note Marines still use bayonets.

As long as we don’t forget the basics and the golden rule, ‘do unto others, first’

We can pick up & use *ANY* thing as a weapon “improvise, adapt, overcome”... we can move into the 21st century as long as we don’t forget lessons learned from previous centuries.

Fireteam leaders wear multiple hats as FT leaders, Squad Leaders, Asst Squad Leaders... etc.

So what is this techie? Can’t radio men wear other hats? Can’t FT leaders wear a tech hat as part of their qualifications for FT ldr?

I *REALLY* dislike giving up that body in the fireteam. Do we *REALLY* need a dedicated Sqd Ldr & ASqd Ldr? How else do we train the FT leaders to move up if not by making them DO THE JOB?

I hate losing that extra man...

Jim agree the military has come a long way. However, I think every man/woman in the service should learn some basic skill minus the technology. Not only should they learn it they should occasionally train on those skills, not everyday but occasionally. Because I promise when shit gets ugly and all of the new high speed gear goes down they all will find themselves in a position to make it work or die without a fight. Something as simple as reading a map, navigation, basic weapons stuff. This is a subject that makes me a bit crazy. Technology is great, I love technology but it can and will go down. Some very primitive skills should be second nature. Carrying heavy shit, camouflage, movement without being detected and the list goes on and on. Dont get me wrong I love advances, many bad guys are in the hereafter because of those advances. But just because your iPhone of or military equivalent cant get a signal does not mean that is the time to lay down and die. No, no, no, that is the time to mean and nasty, let your forehead protrude a bit like a neanderthal. If all you have is a sling shot and your sandals you are still able to be a nightmare for some jackasses.

Sorry, this is a subject that is near and dear to me. I have had the same conversations with SF guys who said they could not do the mission without this special whatever gadget. Normally that is when I would blow a gasket. If it was truly mission critical I shook my head and said roger that. But there is a time to man up strap your ruck on with lots of ammo and demo and go to work.

Jim I am going to go drink some water and cool off I think it is already the summer heat, maybe.

y'all, Jim/Gerald I remember telling cooks and mechanics dont think you will be in the kitchen or working on vehicles all the time. I sent as many of my guys out to firebase as possible. They would cook and work on vehicles but they also worked behind the machine gun on a patrol. They are part of the unit that is what they do.

LTC Jeff Shearer - Yes Sir, my build teams stood watch when the team went out on a level one OP, we were the only ones left beside the warrant and one Infantry guy, even Afghanis were all gone. Good times. I was at one VSP that had a cook, he did his part.

LTC Jeff Shearer - We even had one team out at VSP for some time the Camp took a bad hit for a couple of days, the Team Leader got Bronze Star with "V" and rest CAR's for taking contact.

CPO (Join to see) - Gerald that is a perfect example of what I was saying. We have a different job but we are pretty much worthless if all we can do is one thing. I remember all my support guys were chomping at the bits to go out to a firebase or A camp. Nobody was guaranteed to stay anywhere. My ops SGM went on a MSN with one of the teams. He had helped them with lot of the planning. He went and about half way though the mission he was hit with bad guy machine gun fire. It was not bad, if he was needed for another mission he would have tried to go. I might have tried to put the brakes on it hahahaha
