Good to see an American getting some positive publicity in Okinawa.....much needed there in light of recent events.

the Marines on Oki can sure use some good press for a change. I have dove Onna Point and it can be tricky in moderate to high surf. If you know it well enough there are a couple spots to get out under even tough conditions, but if you don't you can spend the rest of your life being battered against the wall.

Not that bad Chip, but the point is a vertical wall with immediate deep water so the waves wash up on the wall and then wash back off pulling you off the wall if you are attached. 30 feet out from the wall the incoming and reflective wave peaks meet and the height nearly doubles so there is a deep wash in and out as well as on the surface. Onna is an advanced dive site that really needs GOOD LOCAL knowledge before attempting. The article sounded like there were at least two dive classes in the water in conditions that exceed those of novice Open Water Divers. There are many, better dive sites in Oki for novice divers. I was the Okinawa Military Dive Master from 1983 to 1985 as a CWO3 and PADI Master Instructor. Someone made a mistake taking divers into Onna under the conditions implied here. The LT DONE GOOD!!!!!
