An April 2024 Congressional Research Service Report stated that the U.S. Navy’s new USS Constellation-class frigates do not have a tracker illuminator system to guide semiactive radar-homing missiles to their targets. Naval News asked the U.S. Navy to comment on this issue and what is causing frigate program delays. Some people just don't understand weapon system procurement costing. The ships are being built with capabilities beyond what tracker illuminator systems can provide. The cost of building the ship can be kept lower by not including those systems. If the new technology doesn't live up to expectations the tracker illuminator system can be added at a later time as a modification, not ship build cost. Happens all the time.
