U.S. Navy Officer Faces Spying Charges

A redacted charge sheet reviewed by The Wall Street Journal accuses him of communicating secret information related to national defense to a representative of a foreign government twice and attempting to do so in three separate instances.

Cmdr. Lin is suspected of sharing or trying to share information with Taiwan and possibly China, according to officials.

The charge sheet alleges that the accused officer passed along the information “with intent or reason to believe it would be used to the advantage of a foreign nation.”

Under the U.S. military code, the maximum mandatory punishment for the espionage charge is the death penalty.
