After pulling out US forces that were focused on CT and that were part of a numbers game more than there as part of a long term plan --- does this change things? If we fail to understand that it is FID/UW long term campaign we must wage - and with the right capabilities -- why would the outcome be nay different that the past 20 years with a short term C focus?

I am glad to see you are still posting on RP. I was worried you had had enough of the politics and hate.
The Youth have been pushed back by AMISOM. But they are still powerful in the rural areas. Why is that Sir? Also, I am not sure what to think about AMISOM.
I think we should not concern ourselves with words too much when dealing with an enemy. Regardless of enemy. We should locate and destroy with overwhelming force.
al-Shabaab is centered in perhaps the poorest country in the world. The poor are coming under their control for trade and security. In exchange, the poor go to the Mosques and their youth make it into the ranks of the warriors for Su'en.
We continue to make the same mistakes. Let's use our resources to help the poor and counter the Guerrilla warfare al-Shabaab is winning at. They are winning and their ideology is the same spreading across Africa. It is the same ideology in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya...If the poor what to worship a fence post. Give them security to do that. Or, any other god they wish to follow. Just attack the security that demands Submission. Use a C-130 gunship. Whatever blows them off the face of the earth. Let the world see it in video as an example of what is in store for our declared enemies.
No more lying about it. It is us who are the insurgents and we do not care what god you worship. We will gladly send you to whomever if you are going to interfere with civilization.

I think I am ready to throw the CT desk out the window. we need to get rid of it - it has not worked - aint working now - and everyone know that we need to go into t Long Term plan that is FID/UW to combat them. Instead we keep going to these short term CT plans that go no where - and that are but a numbers game. DOD got a break when they pulled forces out so that they could place capabilities back that go with a long term plan. I dont think this is it. Package needs to be CA/SOF and LOG/CSS heavy to really help out Kenya. They got some very good units.. but sustaining them is an issue that creates other issues. If you assist in fixing that - you can let them focus on the fight. If you can sustain your forces - then you have a capability that can also do other things... but you can never get there on a CT focus. We have proven that in 2 decades.

Good comments. I would assume CVEO is already a LOE in the Campaign Plan with FID and SFA included as ways. This may be an effort to contain the spread created by the pull out in SOM. Also agree with your comment re: sustainment. I think, that, plus lack of timely direct action capability (includes intel) is a huge contributing factor. Security Cooperation activities can only support/enable partner nation capabilities up to their absorptive capacity. Ultimately, the American people have to decide on the level of DoD’s commitment.

Very very good points - and spot on center mass of target. But the campaign plan is a very good question - and it was written from a CT focus early on... and what the new one is now I can not say as to. But it is far time to break the short term planning and conduct our campaign planning based on our enemy... and change it over to FID/UW to enable those partner nations. Building INTEL collection and processing abilities is a huge plus in building a capacity up... and maybe the tricky part of that is in the sharing of it so it is collective. But we have neglected so much to focus on a CT capable force -- that is very good - but there is nothing behind them for the long haul. CMO builds up your intel collection and helps to resolve local issues. CA forces assist in many ways in coordination... and without them you create issues instead of resolve them. But maybe should mention medical as well -- and a system that works insures a soldier that if he/she is wounded - they will get treated - and may well survive. That builds morale... and it does a lot more

Americans returning from China were allowed back after screening at select ports of entry and for 14 days afterward.
More than 27,000 Americans returned from mainland China in the first month after the restrictions took effect. U.S. officials lost track of more than 1,600 of them who were supposed to be monitored for virus exposure. Nearly 40,000 Americans and authorized travelers have come into the U.S. from China since President Trump imposed travel restrictions more than two months ago, the New York Times reports.
279 flights from China have arrived in the U.S. since Trump's travel restrictions were announced, "and screening procedures have been uneven," the Times notes.
