The etymology of asperity is "rough." It is adapted from Middle English asprete, which was borrowed from the Anglo-French aspreté, and ultimately derives from the Latin word asper, which means "rough." Not only is asper the source of asperity, but it also underlies the English word exasperate (in fact, you can see asper nestled in the midst of that word). Although it is far less common than asperity and exasperate, the word asper itself is still occasionally used in English—it functions as a synonym of harsh, bitter, and stern.

When Shelia asked Roger to make a contribution, he glared and said with asperity, "I already contributed—thank you."

Read one article where a female Marine D.I. Got in the case of a male recruit whom she accused of ogling her recruits at a post exchange.... He had her laughing so hard within himself he nearly pee’d himself not from laughing but she kept yelling and he couldn’t get a word in to tell her he had to go take care of business. He said he would of gladly returned to let her finish her tirade..

When I reported to Military Indoctrination for Medical Service Officers (MIMSO) the cadre was experimenting with a new concept. They had two unattached TI's, both TSgt's to teach us how to properly adorn our uniforms, stand formations and march. The two physicians chosen as flight leaders were LTC's with no previous military experience. We all knew that the two TI's were having to control their asperity each time the LTC's made a mistake. Those two NCO's should have received either a medal or bonus pay for those two weeks.

SGT John " Mac " McConnell it actually worked out for our class. But everytime I see the 2 TI's trying to correct the two LTC's I just have to chuckle.
