CWO3 (Join to see), I guess this is a "thing" nation wide. I guess guys get their kicks doing this. It's all fun and games until an innocent civilian gets killed. Not funny.

Yet another case of the law not keeping up with the technology. Swatting has become a depressingly common occurrence, I'm frankly surprised it's taken this long for an innocent person to be killed by it. Hopefully this man's death isn't in vain, and legislators finally take steps to hold folks accountable.

Not sure what can be done to stop bored and stupid people from playing dumb games. I can't think of any avoidance measure to prevent this. About the worst we did as kids was frying ants with a magnifying glass. Now it's a whole new ball game. They get so immersed in near-reality death in games that stuff like this just becomes an extension of their game play. At least they caught him.

CPT Zarin N. What does this have to do with LE not keeping up with the technology? Nothing at all - false police reports were filed before 911 systems and the use of computers and related systems were used by LE; what makes you think that they will stop now?
You could reasonably correlate the issue with 911 system and its inability to actually show the close in or actual location of a cell phone, and that has always been an issue and it is not a LE issue it is a technology issue and a privacy issue in some cases.
To put a better perspective on the actual issue that you should be able to relate to as someone in the Signal functional area - If I called 911 through a ham radio telephone relay, how are they going to know my actual physical location? Think about it.
And before you get too wound up, how is LE going to deal with spoofing when the telecommunication companies can do little to nothing to prevent it and locating the perpetrators?
