Thanks for reminding us that President Eisenhower approved a National Security Council paper which aligned with Secretary of State Dulles’ view that the United States should support South Vietnamese President Diem, while encouraging him to broaden his government and establish more democratic institutions SP5 Mark Kuzinski.
Those were the days when we were allied with dictators and some unsavory governments as we squared off with the Soviet union in the heat of the Cold War. In Europe, Africa, South and Central America and throughout Asia we were competing with the Soviets to gain advantages in strategic areas around the world. India vs Pakistan; Saudi Arabia vs Egypt vs Iran; Panama and Costa Rica versus El Salvador and Nicaragua; Angola, Rhodesia, Uganda, Nigeria, Saharan and sub Saharan Africa, etc.
