There should be no federal spending on education except for federal institutions or federal projects. Why should someone in Oregon be forced to pay someone to go to school in Maine? Why should we force someone who did not go to college pay for someone to go. Or, why should the federal Gov't take money from a family who is trying to save to put their children through school so some stranger can go to school?
Yes, we spend too much money on education. Average cost in my county is $9K/year for K-12 Gov't schools. The overhead of colleges is getting unbelievable. The cost of non-instructional expenses is out of control. The main reason for higher costs is the federal Gov't. Student loans should not be guaranteed. Cost increases should not be accepted. Colleges build and build because they know students will pay for it, because the fed Gov't will keep loaning the money to them.

My state pays for two years tuition, our dime. The rest of you should do the same, take care of your citizens.

As in here in many of the legislature are state school graduates, who approves budgets for these institutions? Also, who decides how much of the Federal largess goes to state schools. Much of the cost is associated with other than the teaching staff, these, to use an overworked cliche, snowflakes live better than they did at home and I certainly can't blame the foreign students for coming here to our schools. Also, look into the scholarship programs. Big bucks given away at the expense of the taxpayer and the student than actually pays for their education.

My own view is we could cut it 10-15% with zero impact on quality. You look at the University Campus between states on or near a border that are either within walking distance of each other or stone throw away. Reduce the duplication of campuses. Implement agreements between states that folks along the border can attend either states campus at in-state fees. Just that simplification alone would reduce 10% of costs more than likely. Probably other areas where they could cut as well. Just seems we have put University Education in the "Holy Grail" category of funding. Something not even to be audited or looked at carefully.

And each has many of the same courses which are not utilized to capacity. There was a study a few years ago that showed there are over 50% of the staff in support roles.
