I enlisted long after MREs were introduced, but I am also old enough and aware enough to know of the existence of C Rats.
I figured they must be both hearty and disgusting, as on more then one occasion, I found caches of those cans left out in the training areas at Ft. Bliss. Some of the cans were still intact! We opened one up and it looked like molasses; thick, brown and with a gooey consistency (insert joke here). Of course we would dare each other to try it, but no one ever did. We may be grunts, but we aint that dumb!

In 1997 I had my first MRE at a pooley (delayed entry program) meeting. It was the ham omelet. Luckily for me I am a huge fan of eggs so I was able to endure it. It was kinda round though.
