As far as foreign policy is concerned, I would say when people look at the "south China sea issue" they overlook the role of economic factors. AIIB and BRI, as this states as well, are integral parts of expanding Chinese influence in Asia. States with economic ties are going to be more likely to cooperate on defense down the road. It will be interesting to see if we change our policy as well, perhaps revive the TPP. I do not think it will play out well to simply try to use a navy to deter economic incentives.

Short term solutions that do not look at the full picture tend to be the quick answers you find in our strategy - often failing to see that there is a bigger focus.
