Sometimes the key lessons learned are not what we did or did not do - but in how an enemy conducted a fight. The name of the commander of the IS defense of Mosul is not usually known - but due should be given when one fights 33-1 odds and conducts a brilliant mobile urban defense for 9 months. So many key take away items in this article - none more valuable than that logistics demands have to be planned for.

Mosul originally became a problem when Turkey said no to our plan to invade from the North in 2003!

Became a much bigger problem when a very capable and well lead force was partizaned by the Shia leadership in Baghdad and most of the capable officers replaced with cronies and alot of "ghost soldiers". Can still recall the Iraqi division CDR up there shutting down the 25th ID CDR from doing patrols after the handoff in 2009. By 2013 - four years later... that leadership was long gone and IS rolled over them.

Good read. It seems that Turkey's dictator hindered operations and that fanatics have to be killed to the last man.
