in the meantime, the USMC, Navy and Air Force scrounge for parts to keep the reliable planes flying.
In the meantime, the 4 Star Generals in the USAF pray to kill the A-10 but they can"t due to the legislation from Congresswoman and former A-10 Squadron Commander McSally. What a mess we are in. I am paying for it since the USAR has no money for soldiers that travel, like me, over 150 miles (1500 miles in this case and I am on my way home to Edmonton, Alberta Canada now but I won't get my $300 toward my $700 flight and rental car expense, in part, because the Army is out of money until the 1st of October. I blame the $160 billion and 6 year behind schedule F-35 for part of the blame. Time to buy F-18 Super Hornets instead like Canada and Australia are doing.

Exactly- worked on A10s for 12 years- bad ass. B52s for about the same time- I know they are old frames and are expensive...but you know what they work. We proved it in 91 in Desert Storm and they both performed admirably. I do understand pushing the envelop and new technology, but I also understand fiscal responsibility...and yes it does affect your per diem and mileage reimbursements.

First, I'd like to see Lockheed Martin take ownership for the issue, more so than "safety is our first concern". There should be financial liability imposed for any new weapon system that needs to be grounded or taken from the field within the first year due to design flaws. I'm sure there is a lot of legal red tape that precludes that, but it is what it should be.

Second, I love the A-10. Nothing in any other military inventory can compare to its CAS capability. When you try to make one airframe that can be "multi-role", you need to determine how many roles it can reasonably be expected to manage. In this case, they failed. The F-35 will never be able to manage CAS the way the A-10 does.

Maj Marty Hogan I am thankful that the problems with the F-35A were discovered during scheduled depot maintenance and not because of a crash. The Navy on the other hand has been dealing with operational failures of several of their littoral fleet vessels.
It is much better to find problems before they become catastrophic failures. The airline industry routinely grounds aircraft when problems surface.
Wise airlines and air forces have redundant major systems of aircraft such as bombers, fighters, strategic lift and refuelers so that if one system experiences problems the others can pick up the slack.

If Trump is elected I'd love to see him appoint his daughter Ivanka as an Under Secretary of Defense in charge of contracting and projects at the Pentagon. She is the only person I ever heard of who brought a project in DC in ahead of time and under budget, all while pregnant. They need someone like that to teach 'em how it's done
