Six years of cuts. Two things, unit redesign and money, whose watch was this under?
Always being asked to do more with less. I wonder when this will hit the Navy, if it has not already. Haven't the services been talking about OPTEMPO for some time? But then it is interesting that a lot of money has been poured in to Special Operations Forces for kicking in doors, but the units that support this on the peripherals are being cut and having their readiness degraded.
Unfortunately it appears that shit happens.

SSG Robert Webster I agree this is an OPTEMPO issue if I were king for a day my money would be going to troop strength and existing systems. Lets take a break from some of these expensive high tech science experiments. I find it interesting that at the end of the article the Army went from cutting 40K troops last year before the election to wanting to add 30K. As always we have good leadership in the uniform and they know what needs to be done.

LCDR (Join to see) - Totally agree. What I find interesting is that GEN Allyn told congress the real deal but did they listen? Not well from where I sit. I know that GEN Allyn has the experience and knowledge to tell them the real deal. Especially since he and I worked hand in hand when he was a 1LT and Co XO and I was the Co Ops NCO. And then of course his experience as the commander of the 1st Cavalry Division and of FORSCOM.

Bad? That sounds awful. The 101st is one of the historic units in the entire military. We have always been ready for our next rendezvous with destiny and to see these cuts impact that ability just sucks. There is a reason why the Army developed the Air Assault course and program. There is a reason why the 101st ABN DIV is always on the list of units to call when you need the job done. I just hope these policymakers, many of whom do not understand the power of such a unit, will see that such a cut puts the nation in a weaker position to answer the call when such a mission is needed.

No anonymous sources there, you have the aviation brigade commander and the commanding general with a slew of other highly qualified in the trenches soldiers being interviewed. I have never read such a clear portrait of how letting the Army be run by politicians directly impacts readiness. I just hope this is not a force (USA, AF, NAVY, MC) wide problem.

LCDR (Join to see) - I was glad to see the brigade commander and commanding general go on the record with this one. Sadly, I don't see this being restricted only to the 101st ABN DIV; I am sure others within the DoD will or already have to deal with these sort of cuts.

I wholeheartedly agree and hope that President Trump rebuilds our military after 8 years of drawdowns and sociopolitical experimentations.
