They were able to pull off a fairly capable platform that even supported the liberation of Kuwait but the idea to replace the aft turret with a VTOL flight deck stayed on the books till the very end. The Soviet Union went away and thus the need for a 600 ship navy with all those capabilities. There are still plans to replace all of the turrets with MK141 launchers and make some of the old battle ships missile barges. Unfortunately the Iowa class will have to sit that one out if it ever happens.
