I'm sorry. I can't focus on the story. I'm sure there's something important in it. I just can't get past the fact that I had never before bothered to find out just what is a "metric ton"
The tonne ( i/tʌn/) (British and SI; SI symbol: t) or metric ton (in the United States) is a non-SI metric unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms; or one megagram (Mg); it is equivalent to approximately 2,204.6 pounds, 1.10 short tons (US) or 0.984 long tons (imperial)

Now, I'm left to wonder what is up with Lurch's expression in this photo. I wish I could see whose hands are in whose pockets...
