I guess my question is: doesn't the pilot separate from the ejection seat? That means once they are down, they have to find the seat with the survival pack and rifle.

Had the 'privilege' of participating in an FB-111 extraction exercise at Red Flag.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen we had an F-111 at RAF Upper Heyford that had a hydraulic fire on take off, they were not able to make it back to land and had to punch out. The pod came down in a farmers field and rolled over. The farmer came over and rolled the pod back over to allow the crew to get out.

Actually found the story, memory lapses. The capsule was upside down and one of the crew were pointing at a handle that the farmer pulled to allow the crew to get out. He didn't roll it over.

Vaguely recall a briefing on that incident. We did have some strange occurrences with the 111 capsule after ejection. Best I remember is a tree penetrating the capsule and coming through right between the right seaters legs. Had a good friend who flew out of Upper Heyford in the 70s, he was part of the initial deployment of 111s there.

LTC (Join to see) All I can think about when I hear Ejection Seat these days is the B-1B. Probably Need to address that before we start worrying about Firearms.

Somebody from Remington, Colt is making money. I'm sure the USAF is not buying them for $600 a piece. As far as I know, the only people I can shoot in the USAF are pararescue jumpers and Security Police. I picture of USAF pilot as being a Don Knotts shakiest gun in the West.

LTC (Join to see) - Most security forces shoot like crap. Ask the CATM guys that train them. The AF does have other shooters.

LTC (Join to see) Don't know about today, but when I was on a SAC aircrew we had to qualify annually. Same qualification as basic Army.
