Did you know? Confederate Army/ Navy/ Marine are Veterans

I just think its time to put this issue to rest. It has been discussed enough! I know. I received this from one of my Active Duty mentors and thought it was worth sharing with my fellow veterans
For the Record, U.S. Public Law 810
Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines that fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, Approved 23 May, 1958. This made all Confederate Army/ Navy/ Marine Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans. Additionally, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate gravesites as U.S. War dead gravesites.
Just for the record the last Confederate veteran died in 1958. So, in essence, when you remove a Confederate statue, monument or headstone, you are in fact, removing a statue, monument or head stone of a U.S. VETERAN.
As a result of this law the last surviving Confederate Veteran received a U.S. Military pension until his death in 1959, and from that day until present, descendants of Confederate veterans have been able to receive military monuments to place on graves from the Veteran’s Administration for their ancestors. A Confederate Veteran should therefore be treated with the same honor and dignity of any other American veteran.
At least four U.S. Navy Ships within the submarine force have been named in honor of Confederate heroes or individuals associated with the CSS Hunley (first successful submarine to sink another vessel in combat). They are:
USS Dixon (AS‐37) ( http://www.navysite.de/ships/as37.htm ) named after the submarine’s commanding officer, Lieutenant George Dixon, who died that February night in 1864.
USS Hunley (AS‐31) ( http://www.navysite.de/ships/as31.htm ) named after the submarine’s designer, Horace L. Hunley, who died on the second Hunley training accident.
USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN 601) ( http://www.navysite.de/ssbn/ssbn601.htm ) Commanding General of the Confederate States Army, graduate of West Point, and arguably one of the most gifted military strategists in American history.
USS Stonewall Jackson (SSBN 634) ( http://www.navysite.de/ssbn/ssbn634.htm ) named after General Thomas Jackson, considered General Lee’s “right hand man”, who died at Chancellorsville, which many say led to the Confederate defeat at Gettysburg and ultimately the loss of the War.
There are not many Army Veterans who can say he or she has not served at one of the U.S. Military installations named for a Confederate hero.

Thanks for reminding us COL Mikel J. Burroughs. The headstones, graves and monuments as private, state, and federal cemeteries as well as all of the monuments to the fallen at the National Parks were the principle and very costly battles of the American Civil War were fought need to remain hallowed ground. The past may be debated but the reminders of our corporate history should never be trampled down.
ISIS desecrates and tramples down reminders of history they disdain. There are some in this nation who hold a parallel mindset, whether they realize it or not, which is focused on eradicating the memory of the parts of the past they disdain.
Thankfully, for the present DoD and the Army have resisted pushes from those who wish to wipe part of our past away and have indicated they have no desire or plan to rename the many military posts named after Confederate Army generals. Hopefully common sense will begin to be more prevalent throughout this nation - especially in the minds of both elected officials and the voters of the present and those still in school who will vote in the future.

What most seem to forget about when it comes to the confederacy is the fact that it is U.S. History! Whether good or bad it makes our country what it is today!

SPC George Grimm I just wanted to remind all of our fellow veterans out there that all of these soldiers that fought and died on American soil are still consider veterans period.

I get the flag issue COL Mikel J. Burroughs, but we need to leave the bases as they are. They are part of our history; yes, I know flag is too. I just think a photo of John Bell Hood, or Braxton Bragg, evokes the same emotion. Like many issues, many times we go too far in our hasty efforts to fix things.
