I would wager that 90% of Viet vets did not receive their awards. I never received any and am still not aware of all of the correct awards for my service. I did research a couple PUCs and a NUC, a couple Viet awards and the usual 4 "Thanks for showing up and getting shot at" awards. Was never motivated enough to write for them.

Yeah, Like guys like me. I cannot argue about medals, because I have no memory of the entire tour. I know I spent months in the hospital in Japan, with severe head injuries... problem is - I haven't a clue how I got to Japan - do I deserve a Purple Heart? I guess - if I was hurt bad enough to be med-evac'd to another country - and kept beyond my ETS at the convenience of the Gov't - - I've heard of some that got a splinter in a finger and got a purple heart. As I've said though, I've no memory so I cannot argue the point.
