'Veteran Kids' Documentary Will Bring Attention To Military Families

In the film, children will discuss what it’s really like to be a military brat.
In Nov. 2015, Susan Hackley, managing director of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, released a trailer for a documentary about the impact of war on America’s children and families.
The trailer, titled “Veteran Kids,” allowed Indiana children and their parents to ask service members’ children what it’s like to have their mothers and fathers serving in the military.
The six-minute video touches on some very heavy topics, including loneliness, future career goals, and death, and will be featured in a full documentary called “A Child’s Guide to War.”

I can tell you from having two little ones during my last deployment that it does affect a child in ways that even their servicemember parent does not fully understand. Mine where 3 and 5 for the last deployment and I saw them as much as possible over FaceTime, but they still think that when I go TDY that I am going on deployment again and it breaks their hearts. I think that veteran kids of any age are different for the most part than their civilian kid counterparts because there are things that they have had to do in their lives that their friends have not. It is not across the board, and it is not fair, it is just my opinion.
