ILLUSTRATIONS: (1) VMF-221 ace 1st Lt. Dean Caswell downs a Ki-61 in a head-on pass with his F4U-1a as a Zero fires on him from behind off Okinawa, 28 April 1945. The Tony was one of seven Japanese fighters Caswell downed that day, making him a double ace with 10 kills. Another VMF-221 pilot has flamed the engine on the fighter shooting at Caswell, throwing its pilot's aim off. (2) 1st Lt. Dean Caswell and his wingman return to the USS Bunker Hill in their VMF-221 F4U-1A Corsairs after attacking a coastal position on Okinawa, April 1945
