Communication is a mix of art and science COL Mikel J. Burroughs.
For those veterans who work in related civilian fields the communication challenges are probably less.
For those who go from highly stressful physically demanding military roles to office jobs or jobs where selling skills with a smiling face the challenge can be intense.
For those of us who served decades we experienced challenges every time we changed duty location and military position. The more often we changed and realized we could, we became more resilient and flexible and better communicators.
Communication both oral and written requires practice.
Jargon is one of the hardest things to overcome. Learning how to get your point across without acronyms and jargon is a very useful skill.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - Until you get a civilian that was never in the Navy. I have to catch myself even today, after being retired for 10 years, when talking not to talk Navy but civilian. Its like going back to boot camp but this time re-learning civilian terminology instead of Naval terminology.

I have had to "civilianize" my communication style somewhat, but I've also been lucky in that all of the jobs I've held since I left the Navy had more veteran than non-veteran employees. With the non-veteran co-workers I have learned to alter my style when talking with them.

I can understand the need to adapt for understanding; however, I believe it is beneficial for both sides to make the same effort. I have enjoyed learning about communication styles from my veteran co-workers and friends.
