Here's the thing. Ukraine produces too much energy and food to let them fall under Russia's control. If we look at history, whether it be Alexander or Hitler, Russia won't stop here. With each country he swallows he will gain more resources and will move his economy to a military footing where he just keeps on getting stronger. This is a problem we need to deal with. We either do it today or we wait until it's a much larger problem.
We could move troops into Western Ukraine and put a a no fly zone in that part of the country. That would force Russia to stop at least there, or start a war, a war they are not ready for. But we won't do that. We will continue to do half measures until it's a massive problem.
Yes I know Russia has nuclear weapons. Employing those is a kick the board over maneuver. Everyone loses. Putin doesn't want to lose but he will bluff with them. Are they going to blink first or are we? Meh, probably us. We will blink first as we are doing right now.
