The US fought a war in Vietnam to prevent a Domino effect of countries in the Pacific Rim falling to Communism. When the US left Vietnam in 1975, the new communist Vietnamese government did their best to make the Domino Theory a reality. They invaded Cambodia, but they were stopped cold by the Chinese which lost about 70,000 military casualties in their efforts, first in direct heavy combat and then in a two decade-long low intensity conflict which ended in 1990 with both sides declaring victory. Now, the Vietnamese are worried about the Chinese again as they make motions to control the South China Seas and the land it touches.

Quite a bit at stake here..I don't know what to think about this article. Get back in good blessing with Vietnam or piss off the Chinese... Damned if we Do ! Damned if we don't ! I guess the question would be. How would this impact China and Americans relations ?

I do not trust the Vietnamese government. They are full blown communistic and I never have trusted communists. I too thought about China. It would probably piss off China. They were, as you know, North Vietnam's allie in the war. Now, Vietnam is asking us to build a base there, instead of asking China. As you well put it, we are damned if we do, and damned if we don't. I think, if we did it, our relations with China, what little there is, would go up in smoke. If we don't, our relations with China might increase. With Vietnam, it might piss off that little runt Chinese leader enough he might decide to incorporate Vietnam into China. What do you think about that?

All they want is our technology..... They want leverage over China to use U.S. as a bargaining chip... I say no to Base and, yes to send them some Tex/Mex from San Antonio... They will probably fight over that. SGT (Join to see) .Laffs.
