As far as the VA is concerned I am Vietnam-era veteran since I enlisted in November 1974 even though I was never deployed to Vietnam. I would consider the people of Vietnam who lived their in the 1950s though 1975 are actually the epitome of the Vietnam war veteran since those that survived lived through 20 years of warfare in their nation. Most of the French, USA, Australian and other allied nations sent forces in for a time but redeployed them later.

I had a 90 day TDY to MACV in Saigon in 1963. I spent 63-65 as an Artillery an in Korea.nThen I went back to Vietnam as an Artillery Liaison NCO in 1966 and wit 5th Special Forces in 1967. All that gets me about the same as someone who walks into an Army, Navy store and buy a hat. Probably why I don’t hang out with “””veterans”””
