Pride is at the core of military operations. While our leadership focuses on peripheral issues, the Russian Army is rebuilding. Rather than Kvetching over good order and standards and copping out over 'toxic leadership', we should first focus on ourselves (pride) and then lead our troops by example.
Our hair and uniforms should reflect our discipline and pride in being our best. What comes first? Social paradigms or enough guns and food for our military? Look good, feel good. Be respectful of our flag. It is the symbol of what we have done in the world. Let no one take away the good feelings of doing a great job. We have always been regarded as lesser than the civilian population. As if they are better educated. They are not.
Likewise, our leaders cannot worry about stolen valor and making fools of ourselves. And if someone thanks you, accept it and move on. This is NOT about YOU, it is about us, collectively. We must recognize contributions from our older veterans, members who either died on a lonely beachhead or survived the bloody carnage of those battles. All this disparaging of our country, our flag or good order and discipline is bogus and intended to do damage to military sacrifice.
Pride comes before the fall. But this is a false dichotomy in the military and these terms are not mutually exclusive. We put our fellow servicemen and women first, because to do any less, is to get someone killed or injured. Let's put pride in the proper context. LTC Stephen F. LTC Stephen C. I seem to remember Russia's armed forces being defeated rather handily in Afghanistan and Chechnya. There were several valleys I saw that were full of broken Russian military equipment.

Never underestimate Russia's ability to learn from an asswhupping. The Red Army from 1942 on rolled over one on the best Armies in History. It wasnt just raw numbers either. While "Quanity has its on Quality" they became masters of combined arms and deep battle planning. Not to mention they were tough sons (and d aughters) of a bitches.

1stSgt Eugene Harless - The Germans were plenty tough in 1942 as well. They made a foolish mistake in Stalingrad, and compounded it by attacking into a well-prepared defense at Kursk, else the outcome may well have been different. In any event, see where that got them.
Swiping a province from an ill-prepared Ukrainian state and bullying Georgia doesn't impress me much.
The Russians play at being a big power, but their Navy rusts at the docks and over half of their aircraft cannot fly. They are a paper tiger with teeth enough for intimidating weak neighbors, and little more.

It is not surprising at all that Vladimir Putin is showing of Russian might SSgt (Join to see). There is a very long history of may parades of at first Soviet military might and later Russian military might paraded for the world to see. Intel analysis focused on this event and developed theories about newly displayed equipment.
