In my view, the understanding of our universe is important to the survival of humanity sometime in the future... It won't be tomorrow or the next day, not in the next 100 years but we are entering a negative spiral and if we do not counter it, mankind may cease to exist... It may sound far fetched, but that is what I envision...long term...based on world events in the present...

Indeed, a lot of folks think so - particularly scientists. A lot of gravity research seems to is geared toward the eventuality of expanding our livable territory beyond Earth. What I find to be scary is the need to do that cooperatively, globally, and what happens without cooperation. Simply moving does not put an end to not being good stewards of or planet and the toxic problems it creates. We need to do better before taking our problems off-world.
