My wife and I frequently discuss the "what ifs"... and how terrible it is that we have to even worry about such things. I'm not one given to paranoia, and I generally assume the "odds are ever in our favor"... but what bothers me most is one of the comments made in the original post. Even officials who have their own doubts of guilt are hampered by "required reporting" and other protocols that almost entirely remove the element of sound logic and judgement from the process. I can't recall where I heard it, but I seem to remember a quote along these lines, "When a society becomes so complex that it is regulated more often than lead...injustice is the inevitable consequence".
