This Occupational Physical Assessment Test reminds me of the test I went through in 1975 when I was competing for an appointment to West Point SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL
The major difference is the dead lift replaces pull-ups and push-ups and the one-mile run.
The current version is somewhat different that what I went through in 1975
BB Throw Pull-Up S. Run M. Sit-Ups Push-Ups 1-Mile Run
Male 100% 102 feet 18 reps 7.8 sec. 95 reps 75 reps 5:20 min.
Female 100% 66 feet 7 reps 8.6 sec. 95 reps 50 reps 6:00 min.
In 1975 all testing was in fatigues and combat boots just the APFT of those days.
I expect this OPAT may be a good filter for prospective infantry IET soldiers.
We used to administer a diagnostic APFT early on when I was an Infantry training company commander at Fort Benning in 1985 to 1986. I expect that diagnostic APFT is still part of the training program at Fort Benning - at least I hope it is.

I remember we had to pass a fitness test for Infantry back in 1965 it was called basic and AIT,funny I don't recall anyone failing, the Army recycled a few folks but not many as I recall, probably the much higher number of personnel available made this possible with the draft and all,and believe me no one and I mean no one wanted to be recycled!

I did BCT and AIT (11C) at Fort Jackson in late '69-early '70, SGT Philip Roncari. I may be wrong, but I think that young men weren't so squishy as they are now, and certainly didn't need to be coddled either. Also, it didn't matter whether you enlisted or were drafted, guys were just in better shape, physically and mentally.

LTC Stephen Curlee -I agree with you and would like to add that with the advent of fast foods and lack of physical exercise with most teenagers in later generations that certainly made a difference, you know the old joke about walking up hill to school both ways in the snow did have a certain ring of truth to it with our generation!
