AMEN! Sgt Martin Querin We can thank Congress Woman COL (Ret) Martha McSally for her work in saving the A10 program.

There's a local corporation here in Minnesota named Stavatti that is proposing a new single engine platform with the same capability called the "Machete". It would use a new type of metal foam that can stop projectiles better than current forms of armor. The A10 costs approx 10,000 dollars per flight hour where the new concept would cost 1,000 dollars per flight hour.

SPC Tom DeSmet wasn’t that one of the three that just went through the tests? In any case it would make an interesting post.

I believe that they are looking at (to the Airforce's credit) this in terms of not needing a "Ferrari" to go to the grocery store. When looking at the majority of CAS missions in Afghanistan and elsewhere where the objective is fairly straight forward in scope and not requiring extreme high performance aircraft. They are also dealing with a massive shortage of highly skilled pilots recently stated to be approx 1500 short. Even recalling pilots from retirement won't fill the gap so making a platform somewhat easier to fly and maintain will free up the highly skilled pilots to fly the high performance for their critical roles as well. I like the local Minnesota corporation's chances as Orbital ATL is here as well. They are already in the "Special Missions Aircraft" business and I believe it would make for interesting synergies moving forward.
