You have to do a little fact checking on this one. The initial deal with MP Materials took place in 2020 during the Trump presidency when DOD sent about $10 million to MP. This is a continuation of that 2020 DOD driven initiative to create a one-stop, American shop for all magnetic needs, i.e., magnets needed to keep smartphones, laptops, and laser-guided missiles operational. Up to now MP has depended on Chinese factories to process the raw materials it mines do that. This initiative requires MP to invest $700 million of its own funds into a new manufacturing plant near its mine -- to take that magnet manufacturing away from china and not have DOD reliant on Chinese manufactured products.

CWO4 Terrence Clark - Oh, my gosh. Thanks for the links. Seems like we've been had by China's habit of investing in companies doomed to fail. How can it not be obvious to folks elected and appointed to government positions!?

SFC (Join to see) - GHWB always comes to mind in relation to China, from when he was Ambassador to China, and while president. Don't know if the kids accompanied them, but they may have been all grown up by then. But it would have made an impression on them to if they visited their folks in China.
He did a lot to normalize relations, and it was past time. An example: in 1980 a grad student in Chemistry who lived in the same building told me she was the first student from Mainland China who had been allowed to study in the U.S.A.
However, I have often wonder if he was too trusting of China as Ambassador, and as President.

If it takes magnet mfg away from China it could actually be considered a Trump win since he started it, Biden is just continuing what Trump started.

PO2 Marco Monsalve - we can hope this is the result. Honestly, I don't judge win/lose by the mope in the Oval Office. Is it a win for you and me? If it is, great. I'll take the "w". If it isn't, it doesn't matter because it isn't a win.
