What would you do to survive? Lie? Sure, why not. This is a wonderful story of such a lie. It puts me in mind of another lie we once heard. I'm not a fan of Senator McCain. I respect his service and enjoyed watching him stumble around the District of Calamity like the proverbial bull in the china shop, but I disagree with recent attempts to shame him because he made some anti-American statements while incarcerated as a POW at the Hanoi Hilton. That was necessary to his survival. We all would do most anything to survive and lying is a small thing. I doubt that anyone was persuaded to hate America when he appeared among his captors uttering their script.

Professor Norman Finkelstein (a distant relative) once wrote an article about the things his mother did to survive. He told of Jewish women dying their hair blond, including their pubs to appear more Nordic, using false papers and even bribing German officials when possible.

CPT Jack Durish
My mother-in-law was the greatest survivor of them all. She was just 14 when the Cossacks raided her village in the Ukraine, raping, murdering, and pillaging. She was carrying an infant sister when she was struck on the shoulder with a saber, then bayoneted. She and the infant were thrown into a trench where she was found still alive. The infant dead. She lived to 101.
