"We found out who is ESSENTIAL, its the people who clean the rooms in hospitals, who cook the food, sterilize the instruments, can't thank them enough, I can't do my job without them doing their jobs, they are just as important as I am in the hospital."
That's Dr Phil Roe, Member of Congress, representing the 1st District of Tennessee, Ranking Member House Veterans Affairs, veteran of the US Army Medical Corps, Korean War veteran describing the essential role of hospital staff so that doctors and nurses can do their jobs. Dr. Roe was a guest on White Plains, NY Post 135 based Sons of the American Legion Radio with Ken Kraetzer. Highlights of the discussion:
1. Actions taken by Congress starting with conference on Jan. 29th.
2. Preparations at Dept of Veterans Affairs for Covid-19, screen procedures discussed at American Legion Washington Conference March 10th.
3. Missions of the VA: Cemeteries, Disability payments, Health care, Assistance to nation during national health emergencies, maintain national stockpile of health equipment.
4. Effectiveness of ventilators, need to find other remedies such as #Remdesivir.
5. "We found out who is Essential" applauded heroism of staff at VA and all Health Care workers.
6. Tragedies at nursing homes, concern for isolation of those who can not be visited by family
7. Cases at VA facilities: "At VA .7% employees infected had been 20% in Italy." Patients: 9,691 Covid19 cases, 770 patient deaths, 582 inpatient; Staff Members 1,133 Covid19 cases, 23 staff deaths as of May 5th includes some civilians treated (Military Times, Leo Shane)
8. Cruise Ship Infection, Diamond Princess, average age passenger age 75, intervention bu Health and Human Services Doctor made difference, "No one died"
9. Talking Care of Mass Casualties, "We were trained in Korea in what to do, no one better than the US Military at this."
10. Perspective on 1918 and 1968 epidemics, less media at those times
11. What testing will tell, "We don't know the denominator of this, how many are actually infected"
12. Attracting Medical Staff to VA: During Covid19 VA has hired 10,000 new staff as other medical facilities have furloughed, VA has created 1.500 residents slots in primary care and mental health.
13. Telehealth Increase during Covid19: Doctors very happy with this, someone a Dr. knows well doesn't need to see in person, can be spoken with on phone or screen, unless they are very sick. ICUs are using video health to provide access to out of town doctors.

Kansas City based Cerner Corp assigned ten year projected $16 billion contract to electronically track military members health records form entry to DOD to VA. (Fierce Healthcare Feb. 27th, 2020)
14. Preventing Veterans Suicide: "Solved Locally, remedy suggested for reducing the deaths of 20 former military members per day continues despite $9 billion spent in recent years by Federal government.
15. Highlights of Dr. Roe's service in Washington:
-Career started living near military base and training with troops.

- Forever GI Bill
- Appeals Modernization, reducing one million claim backlog to soon zero
- In retirement plans to work on Dole Foundation to help disabled veterans.

My daughter-in-law is a CNA at a VAMC, She is putting in more hours than the RN's. But she is not complaining. Part of the job.

This is how it is in a combat zone. One in 5 are in direct combat, while 4/5 serve in vital support functions! This virus reminds us once again how interconnected and interdependent we all are.
