Agreed that the Coast Guard is a part of the Department of Homeland Security, and THAT is where their funding issues lie. The remaining armed services fall under DOD, from which they are funded. It would seem that Homeland Security should take action. The Coast Guard deserves to be funded, but to complain that DOD is not taking care of them is ludicrous.

LTC (Join to see) - Not necessarily. The US has been at war for quite a few years now and the CG has yet to pulled in as Navy asset. They still operate under their own leadership. The CG could be used like that but it hasn't been since WWII.

The Coast Guard does have a unique challenge. It is a military service with military members but doesn't fall under DOD. Because of that, it follows the same pay and pension plans as other military services and must maintain readiness as part of the US military strategy but must also perform 11 mandated maritime missions that could not be completed if they fell directly under DOD. They have to do that all with less budget and less manpower than any other service. So to an extent, DOD does need to advocate and help fund personnel resources for USCG military personnel just like they do for everyone else especially since pay and retirement are HUGE parts of the budget. But DHS needs to do a better job of funding as well.

LCDR Keith Trepanier - thank you Keith for clarifying it and putting it in the right context but it would be cool to see Coast Guard Cutters put on torpedo tubes and other weapon systems that are there for declared war since you're right there is a drug war going on for a long time I really publish an article were the Canadian Coast Guard helped the United States Coast Guard capture about 17 tons of Coke in the Caribbean. They are bigger threats other than global warming looming for North America and that is one of them.

LCDR Keith Trepanier - and wonder if 165 billion dollars which is the amount that they wasted on the still problem prone F-35 would have helped out the Coast Guard? I wonder how many Coast Guard helicopters are not operational due to lack of spare parts? We have over what 35% of our Aviation Assets in the complete military grounded due to lack of spare parts but yet all of money is funneled into that junk Strike Fighter the F-35.

Sounds like a Homeland Security issue, they got an increase and the USCG falls under them. Reallocate some of the funding for illegals and refugees to them.

Homeland Security

The budget calls for $462 billion in non-defense discretionary spending. The Department of Homeland Security is the biggest winner that spending bucket, with a 6.8 percent increase to a total budget of $44 billion.

The White House listed cybersecurity among four management goals, and is looking to DHS as the center for new activity. The budget blueprint calls for $1.5 billion for DHS activities to shield federal networks and critical infrastructure from cyberattack.
