I was talking to a neighbor about this just yesterday. While my heart goes out to those in mourning, pounding your fists on the podium and demanding that something be done isn't going to get you anywhere. Like it or not, these high schoolers just got a tough lesson in Life 101. Namely that there is evil in the world and sometimes that evil crashes into what you thought was a safe place and wrecks your view of the world. Secondly, that there isn't always an easy answer to life's problems. Life doesn't always fit in a neat little box. It's messy. And sometimes there's nothing you can do about it. Creating slogans and signing petitions might be a start but if that's all you have you'll get nowhere.

Do Something... I couldn't agree more, we need to do something. Problem is no one wants to address the problem, the left is quick to blame the gun, but the tool is not the problem. The problem is mental health. When ate we going to have a serious discussion about the root problem?

Sir
Many of the Folks that say "DO SOMETHING" keep repeating leftist talking points which actually do nothing. When they say strengthen a background checks they can't even explain how or why the current ones are so weak according to them. To a large portion of them, Virtue signaling is a way of life as long as they "APPEAR" to do something.

I hate to admit that so many of our elected "representatives" are willfully ignorant - especially where firearms are involved. Their "fix" is to pass broad, sweeping legislation, thinking it'll be a "fix". One of our local city councilmen has decided that a high tax on ammunition will make things more difficult. Ok, I'll just go 20 miles to Idaho and buy what I want. I'd have no intention of doing harm, but those who do, will do the same.
I keep hearing that "mental health" argument. That so many people with "mental issues" are still able to legally purchase weapons. Supposedly, the Vegas shooter "had" no discernible mental issues.
Th Florida shooter had some serious issues.
Where's the middle ground here?
Just my opinion, it's not just "mental health" issues causing these shootings. It's a societal breakdown of discipline, respect and lack of morals. It's a numbness to others' pain and suffering. It's a willingness to inflict harm on others without fearing or even considering the consequences. An example from military experience: I'll liken some of that to the blaming of a Soldier's NCO for that Soldier writing a bad check. Ya, no one got "hurt" but it's a perfect example of "blame redistribution". It's not holding ADULTS accountable. It's parents not disciplining their children; teaching them harsh consequences.
It's the glorifying of gang culture, rape and violence that our youth are being spoon-fed on an hourly basis on TV and video games while parents sit idly by not interacting with their progeny.
I don't think there's any "one fix" to this problem.

SGM Lynette Streitfield - I agree there are issues in law enforcement, SGM, and that some progressive priorities are misguided. Certainly political interference either way is usually unwise. But personally, I am more concerned that our cops are totally outgunned by the criminals, and as a result, seem more fearful than ever on duty. It's already dangerous and stressful enough - as we know in the military. As a result, we are seeing more and more of these "shoot first" and think later incidences, when de-escalating is more often than not the right choice. But, I understand why in part... when the lethality quotient is so high out there!

COL John McClellan - I had to chuckle at the thought of criminals outgunning our LEOs. Conspiracy theorists would argue that our police are "too militarized".

Yes - 40 years ago there were virtually no US police forces with armored vehicles... maybe a handful of big city SWATs... that’s it. Now they are everywhere. Not a conspiracy, it has happened right out in the open! Still, thoysands of cops face individual overmatches in firepower in multiple calls, before the MRAP arrives. Witness the scene in Parkland, the armed Resource Officer was in fact, outgunned by the perp.

COL John McClellan - perfect example of more "blame redistribution" in Parkland. While I refuse to Monday Morning Quarterback the RO's lack of engagement, the Sheriff was all too happy to jump on the anti-NRA at the CNN town hall the other night. It was likened to a WWE Smackdown event aimed at putting the blame on the NRA and Dana Loesch. Instead of the Sheriff taking some of the heat for either not properly arming or training his RO, he's put all his chips in the pot against the NRA and AR-15 owners. I'll not give up either of my AR-15s.
