To be honest I am much more interested in what the people of Syria can salvage from the Syrian Civil War than in anything the USA could salvage from this multi0faceted conflict and human disaster SP5 Mark Kuzinski.
Russia and Turkey have long had relations and alliances with Syria over the past century. In fact Syria was part of the Ottoman Turkish Empire one century ago.
Inn modern times Syria had domination of Lebanon. The Obama Administration support of the Arab Spring had significant impact on the unrest and rebellion that bubbled up around the Mediterranean Sea in general and in Syria specifically. The USA backing out of Iraq after supporting the Arab Spring created a perfect storm in the region which pushed Iraqi military leaders to the ISIS cause and allowed it to develop into a fierce and unstable enemy.
This is the one are where I can see the US government learning - never again should we be party to encouraging an open rebellion against governing powers in a region we understand so little about [that now includes all regions]

"The Obama administration has been sitting at the Syrian poker table for more than two years now; the White House still hasn't figured out who the patsy is."

Exactly.
