This theory involving economics and physiological conditions was put forth in 2012. Someone forwarded it to me through Ancestry.com. The "Little Ice Age" at the time was world wide, with the coldest being about 1680 to about 1710.

the same reason for the huge number of murders in Europe in the same time period : Christianity.
That is the same reason the are killing witches in Africa now

Will need to read later. But I did hear that possibly some of the killing of witches was for land control or something to that nature.

Land became a motivator as the accusations and trials went on. Case in point was Giles Corey. He refused to enter a plea because he knew either way his property and land would be confiscated.

The villagers just hated those from the town to the north. First signs of North, South friction in the new world :-)
