IT is the most mismanaged area in business and government. Most C-level managers don’t even agree where it belongs on an org chart. Many years ago I read IT Governance (published by Harvard Press) and began giving copies to managers at organizations where I was under contract. One, an IT manager at Nissan, bought a case of them and began giving them to the C-level managers at that company. I highly recommend it to this day to anyone who wants to be an IT manager or stands in a role with IT under them.

As an IT Manager, I think this article was relatively spot on. My main function is day-to-day operations and managing my team to ensure our customer's are taken care of. At times, my team may come to me for advice on how to handle any number of different scenarios to resolve an issue for a customer. I manage the shifts, ensuring the paperwork side of management is completed, making sure my team have the tools they need to effectively do their job, and checking in on their mental health as well. A burned out tech is not a happy tech. The only thing I don't have is a degree - just 20 years of military experience and every IT thing I've learned was on my own or through collaboration with my fellow IT professionals.

53A that! Great career track. Was @ DCS-IM @ PSF when 6A was the first Army to go desktop! And like any job —> Lots of people skills required to get everyone online and help troubleshoot issues. Same skill set applies today and not limited to IT.

Rev/add/edit —-> And those Wang’s could Chung!
