When I first arrived in Japan. At 6'2", 220, I pretty much towered over the entire population, so when I would walk down a street, waves of people would turn to look at me. It was disconcerting until I got used to it.

I just got back to CONUS 3 weeks ago after 3 years in Japan and I can hardly believe how much things have changed.

I didn't return to my hometown until I had finished college, completed the basic school, IOC, and had almost a year and a half in the FMF. My friends were the same, EXACTLY THE SAME, as when I left. I thought I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone. My wife and I cut the visit short and went back to Camp Pendleton. Does that count as culture shock?

Absolutely. Service exposes you to life experiences that civilians cannot conceive of, experiences that change you.
