Rewriting history for some political or ideological purpose is never a good idea. The myths of chopping down the cherry tree and tossing a dollar across the Potomac were crafted to show a divine blessing on Washington thereby fulfilling the biblical requirement that kings are anointed by God to rule over us. When Washington refused the crown, the myths, no longer necessary, lingered. As I grew up they were taught in schools preventing me from discovering the real man.
