If the law isn’t going to protect people then people are going to protect themselves. Criminals should promptly be held accountable by the system or the system is useless. Criminals need to know that there are swift consequences for their actions, like pretrial detention, enforceable curfew conditions, etc. The system worked in the past, and it can work again if the Legislature and the courts would tighten things up."

My oldest neighborhood has a block watch and people living there who face dangerous situations constantly and still jump to aid anyone who needs it.

Well you have police officers not doing their job in that city. Community policing works. The police cannot do their job without the publics help. Any police department that has lost the trust of the community needs a complete overhaul of leadership within the department. As one who lives in a large city with an undermanned police force and led by democrats we have managed to be one of the safest large cities ( presently #4 which is a drop for us) in America and at times the safest in the US for the past 20 years. How we have managed to do it? It was with community policing. If the community does not trust its police force then the police cannot do their job. Those are the simple facts. No guns are needed whatsoever.
