First, this was written by Kate Germano. She was shit canned for doing a poor job at Parris Island in as the women's recruit training battalion. She was accused of being a toxic leader which can mean anything or nothing.
The Marine Corps has a track record of winning battles by making Marines harder than the circumstances they will face. It isn't just Parris Island, it is schools and the Fleet that makes Marines harder than most. Let me ask a question, do we think Parris Island is easier or harder than it was in 1950? It was harder is the answer. I am not sure if making it easier is better. We have an obligation to train as hard as possible to get people physically and mentally ready.
I have a semi-direct experience with an "event" taking place in boot camp. While I was at Parris Island in 1981, Anwar Sadat, the leader of Egypt, was murdered. We were all told that this was it. We could all expect to be moved to 0311 (Infantry) and be ready to leave Parris Island to Infantry training and immediate deployment to the middle east.
We could see no newspapers or magazines so we had to accept what we were told at face value. So F'ing what. This went on for maybe a week. Guess what, we all lived. I am still alive. I didn't collapse in to a heap whimpering under the terror of having to go to war. Wait, I joined the Marine Corps, I expected to go to war.
This story is such a crock of bovine excrement the digital universe has been harmed by having these 0's and 1's floating about in it. Carry on.

Cpl Jeff N. So you are saying you agree with article then? That was a joke. Seems lately like Marine DIs are getting hammered. Some of it is deserved like the case of the kid who wound up needing skin grafts due to chemical burns. Some of it not so much. This is the second category. It definitely will drive home the point that enlistment carried the possibility of going to war, and being ordered to the front lines. Something that really should be fully considered before enlisting. I can admit that I hadn't thought about it before enlisting which looking back I think was stupid.
