I really hope that the VA steps up to cover soldiers impacted by much of the crappy air many of us had to breath in Iraq and Afghanistan. The article is right, we need to advocate for coverage.

The thing is that the Gulf War Presumptive conditions list is so liberal and amorphous, that with proper documentation of service, a Gulf War vet can get service connection for almost any medical issues. The trick is to do a fully developed claims, with Disability Benefits Questionnaires where available, complete, along with letters from doctors, medical records etc.

Absent these documents claims tend to be more likely to be rejected because the VA has more work to do, and they are overwhelmed. This is not the fault of the veterans, but it is reality...
