"When Trumpets Fade" is a decent recreation of the carnage and foolishness that occurred in the Hurtgenwald. It is (or was) also available via Netflix.
Having participated in a staff ride of this battlefield, I cannot fathom the ignorance of planners who drew a circle on a map and committed a US division to fight in terrain commanded by German artillery and the division MSR amounted to little more than winding mountain trail barely wide enough to accommodate a jeep.
